What to Bring to a Mobile Notary Appointment in California

Valid government-issued photo ID

Every signer needs their own current ID. Acceptable forms include a California driver license or ID card, U.S. passport, military ID, or other government-issued photo identification. The name on your ID should reasonably match the name on the document.

All signers present

California law requires the signer to appear before the notary in person. If two people are signing, both must be present with separate IDs. Do not sign the document beforehand — signatures must be witnessed.

Complete documents

Fill in every blank except signature and notary sections. Incomplete documents cannot be notarized. If you're unsure how to complete a field, contact the company or attorney that sent the document — notaries cannot provide legal advice.

Witnesses, if required

Some documents (certain trusts, deeds, or affidavits) require one or two witnesses in addition to the notary. Check your instructions in advance. If you need witnesses, arrange them ahead of time or ask your notary whether witness services are available.

Payment and confirmation

Know your fee estimate before the appointment. For loan signings, the title company or lender may have already arranged payment. For general notary work, confirm accepted payment methods when you book.
